For more than 20 years the International High Speed Machining Conference is a meeting for experts from academia and industry in the field of machining operations to present and discuss their findings on a very high level, which stimulates and supports the knowledge in this field.

On 2025 the 18th International Conference on High Speed Machining will be organized by Université de Lorraine, CNRS and Arts et Métiers in the city of METZ and will focus on high performance machining, hybride manufacturing, tools and production machines.

The conference will provide an opportunity to compare and discuss experimental developments and theoretical research combining Material Science, Mechanics of solids or Metallurgy and and applied research particularly about Manufacturing processes

Brief History of HSM conference

At the industrial machining initiative, the French Ministry of Research and Technology funded from 1992, a project called “Technology Leap to Very High Speed Machining”. During three years, This Technological Leap brought together French industrials but also academics to develop and promote the High Speed Machining in France. This project was not the only, other major industrial countries have also encouraged similar actions (USA, Germany…).

After the leap Technology, the teams working on machining processes wished to compare their progress with that of our European neighbors and particularly with those of our German partners. On this occasion, the idea of this conference was in place. Darmstadt University of Technology (TU PTW directed by Prof. SCHULZ) and the Metz University (Prof. DUDZINKI and MOLINARI) associated with the Research Center of Special Steels (CREAS, Ascométal Compagny- Amneville) are volunteered to organize the first conference heavily involved in this area of research. The association of French engineers machining AUTGV (French Association of High Speed Machining) actively supported this approach.

The first Conference on High Speed Machining (HSM) was held in Metz in 1997, it was then denominated Franco-German Conference in High Speed Machining. It was from this first edition a great success with many participants equally engineers and scientists.

The event was renewed in 1999 in Darmstadt with international character reinforced and again at Metz (2001). The 4th International Conference on High Speed Machining held in Darmstadt (2003), it was organized by the Technical University of Darmstadt and PTW at the Darmstadtium. The Metz teams organized the 5th Conference at the Arsenal in March 2006.

Professor ABELE offered to host a new partner, the Tekniker (Spain). This proposal was accepted by all the research team leaders. The goal is that HSM Conferences become a real European showcase of research in machining.

During HSM 2010, under the leadership of Professor ABELE, HSM consortium was created. This consortium is made up of current partners (LEM3, TU-PTW, Tekniker and Ideko) which add Prague Technology University with the RCMT Laboratory and the National University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Nanjing. Today the conference is organized by a Coordinators Board comprised of the following members:

  • Dr.-Ing. Eberhard Abele (PTW, Darmstadt-Germany)
  • Xavier Beudaert (Ideko)
  • Alain D’Acunto (LEM3, Lorraine University, Arts et Métiers, Metz-France)
  • Petr Kolar (RCMT, CTU Prague-Czech Republic)
  • Jokin Manoa (Ideko)
  • Dr. Ning He (NUAA, National University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Nanjing-China)
  • Luis Uriarte (Tekniker)
  • Dr.-Ing. Matthias Weigold (PTW, Darmstadt-Germany)
